Party!

img_4740.jpg

Since we’d already celebrated with family, it was time to celebrate Rich’s 30th birthday with our dear friends. I sent out invitations a few weeks ago, and we had a great turnout last Friday night at our house for the party. Unfortunately, several friends couldn’t make it, because at the last minute Brad and Valerie decided to have a rehearsal dinner for their Chattanooga wedding ceremony (which was Saturday night). We missed them, but had a full house anyway! (Nathan and Amber were the photographers…check out their amazing shots from the wedding…click here).

It was a unique birthday party, because usually we have a group of Calvary friends who know each other and then a few other couples who we introduce into the Calvary group. But this time it was so interesting, because everytime the doorbell rang and someone else came in, we had to introduce them to everyone else. I guess we managed to invite a bunch of couples who didn’t know each other and didn’t even realize it until the party!!! We still had a great time, because all of our friends are awesome and incredibly welcoming and fun to be around. And now, hopefully, many of them will be good friends!

Here’s Rich with the pumpkin spice cake I made for him, again, with the “30″ on top :) We sang Happy Birthday to Rich and Nathan, who’s birthday was the Wednesday after Rich’s.

img_4732.jpg

We took this incredible group shot…Rich had set up the tripod so that everyone could be in the picture! Let’s see…I think I would like to name everyone so that our out-of-town friends can get to know our Chattanooga friends!!! Jason and Kellie Dykast, Nathan and Amber Holritz (with Austen and Addison), Shanika Sexton, Mikey and Naomi Neidich, Rich Green, Adam and Niki Davenport, Chris Froehlich (Jennifer was out of town), Tim and Steph Blackiston (with Reece and Evan), Ashley and Christy Howe (with Emerald), and Jeff and Amber Read. Fun Times, guys!

img_4750.jpg

A few of our friends had to leave at this point, and with the remaining buddies, we played a very interesting memory/strategy game that Kellie taught us. No one else had ever played, so Jason and Kellie were the only ones with an advantage.

We played two rounds. The guys won the first one fair and square…

img_4757.jpg

…and the girls won the second round because I cheated. But it was okay, because it was a very obvious cheating, not a sneaky deceitful cheating :)

img_4761.jpg

Anyway, Rich and I just want to thank everyone for their support, kindness, generosity, and love. We are so incredibly blessed to have such a support system and DO NOT take you for granted. I find myself counting my blessings constantly!

Speaking of generosity, Rich made out very well at his party!!! You all were NOT supposed to do so much! He got Lowe’s gift cards, Macaroni Grill gift cards, Rave Theater gift cards, a Wolf Camera gift card, the new David Crowder CD, and two AMAZING homemade Superman cards (from none other than the artistically-inclined Niki and Kellie). He even got some cash! Wow. Thank you all so much (I will benefit from all of these gifts, so it is most appropriate for me to thank you as well!).

Then on Saturday, Rich and I went shopping for some shoes for the “Shoes for Orphan Souls” drive that Moody Broadcasting Network does every year. It is the coolest thing, because they collect brand new shoes and take them to different countries to actually put the shoes on the feet of orphans while loving on them in the name of Jesus. I think they even do a gospel presentation and give people an opportunity to respond. VERY cool. We were all excited to be part of it and found some really cute little sandals and I took a quick picture of them. We chose all the same pair since we wondered if they’d end up at the same village, there would be nothing for the kids to fight over! If you haven’t bought any shoes yet, it’s not too late! Target has some great shoes on the clearance rack! Like $3 a pair! And there are tons of drop-off locations around town.
img_4780.jpg

Then on Monday night we went to Jason and Kellie’s house in Cleveland. They made homemade calzones which were delicious!!! Hello! I ate the whole thing! And Rich and I were under strict orders to bring a homemade cheesecake - New York Style. We had a great time with them and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the company.

img_4782.jpg

Till next time! We love you guys!

Rich’s “Birthweek”

Happy 30th Birthday to my wonderful husband!!! His actual birthday was last Saturday, August 19th, but we were in Highlands, North Carolina for the weekend to celebrate our 2nd Anniversary as well as Rich’s birthday. And if you’ve ever been to Highlands, you are well aware that it is gorgeous and quaint, but that contact with the outside world is severely limited. For example, I had zero cell phone service for the entire trip! There is a cute little place called SweetTreats (with delicious food and ridiculously good ice cream) that serves as the town’s wireless internet access, but we’d decided to leave our laptop at home. Needless to say, Rich and I had so much fun while there we really didn’t miss it all that much. We enjoyed nature. We ate lots of great food. How about if I just share some pictures from our weekend?

Oops! I must back up for a moment. The day before we left town, we had a family birthday get together for Rich at Logan’s Steakhouse, one of his favorites. We had a great dinner and I got out the cake that I had brought to the restaurant. Here is Rich with the cookies ‘n’ cream cake that I made for him and discreetly placed his age (30) on the top!
img_4593.jpg

Here is Rich with his nephew Ben, who turned 3 just a day before Rich turned 30! They blew out the candles together…
img_4595.jpg

We set the camera up at the end of the table and tried to get a group shot…all of Rich’s immediate family was there: his parents (my wonderful in-laws), Jeff and Jackie, Randy and Susan and their 4 kids. We had a great time!

img_4596.jpg

A sweetie shot…
img_4597.jpg

And now we come to the Highlands pictures. This first picture is of the cabin where we stayed. It was gorgeous…many bedrooms and furnished beautifully. Friends of ours own it, and were so gracious to let us stay for the weekend. Thank you so much, Davis family! What a blessing!!!
img_4599.jpg

This was just one of the many wonderful buildings on Main Street…Rich and I love stonework, and spent time admiring the Highlands architecture.

img_4603.jpg

On Saturday morning, we went to Bucks coffee shop on Main Street and looked over some local maps to decide where we wanted to go hiking. We chose a moderate hike (about 2 miles) called Whiteside Mountain. Here we are are the trailhead…

img_4608.jpg

Here we are at the summit, but unfortunately, the day was very hazy and the view wasn’t as spectacular as it would have otherwise been. We still enjoyed the hike, the scenery, and spending time together.

img_4609.jpg

Then Rich got this amazing shot. I think it is very reminiscent of Ansel Adams…

img_4611.jpg

Done with our hike and ready to head back downtown…

img_4622.jpg

We found these wrought iron porthole looking things and liked the way they look…

img_4625.jpg

We went back to the cabin and made a cake for Rich’s birthday evening, and went to dinner Saturday evening at Woflgangs, a restaurant on Main Street with excellent cuisine.

img_4629.jpg

It was Rich’s birthday dinner, and it was delicious!!! Since we had a cake waiting back at the cabin, we passed on dessert and headed back.

img_4635.jpg

A self-portrait by Heather…who said Rich was the only one with this talent?

img_4627.jpg

This is Rich about to enjoy one of his mini-bundt cakes, and somehow I managed to capture some really cool light while it was playing with the shadows…

img_4639.jpg

And I can’t even begin to explain how Rich did this one. We were sitting at the dining room table eating cake when he told me to look into the mirror while he took a picture. I had no idea it would actually turn out!

img_4644.jpg

I decided to bring Rich’s presents with us to Highlands so he could open everything on his actual birthday. Amber and Jonathan had sent Madagascar, one of our favorites. The characters are genious, and King Julian absolutely cracks us up…we talk in his voice to each other on a regular basis.

img_4654.jpg

And I don’t have a picture, but my mom had gotten Rich a pair of really cool plaid Quicksilver shorts that he liked back when we were at Disneyworld in July. She had snuck back into the store and bought them for his birthday! Totally surprised him! Go mom!

Amber and Jonathan even sent a present for me! It is a supersoft blanket, my favorite kind, and my goal was to have one in every room of our house to match the decor. This one is in the guest bedroom! Thank you guys!!!

img_4656.jpg

Rich wanted a new pair of perscription glasses for his birthday, so we went shopping in Chattanooga. We found this Oakley pair that we love, and they were a gift from his parents! He wore them for the first time during our weekend in Highlands and really likes them! He’s a hottie…

img_4660.jpg

We found a local community bible church and went to church Sunday morning. It was a great service! After church, we went to a local barbeque place and used the paper bag placemats to write love notes to each other…

img_4662.jpg
Before we left on Sunday afternoon, we played a tie breaker game of pool. Rich had won the first game on Saturday, then I won a game, and Rich was NOT going to leave Highlands until he sealed his victory. So, we played a third game and it was down to the 8 ball. We both took several turns trying to sink the 8 ball and then Rich was successful. Good game, honey. Just wait until next time…

Then we went out back for just a few minutes before heading out. There was a really fun tree swing and we each took a turn and had a blast.

img_4712.jpg

img_4696.jpg

On our way out of town, we stopped at Dry Falls and took in the beautiful waterfall. It’s huge, but you can actually walk behind it and stay fairly dry. We enjoyed the view and then hopped back into our car for the 3 hour trip home. It was a great weekend, and again, thank you Davis family for your generosity! We miss you!

img_4723.jpg
This is Rich. I thought I would tack some stuff to the end of this blog.

I was looking at some pictures on our computer when I found a picture that totally made me do a double take. A self-portrait pre Nathan-and-Amber days… in the first year that we met! First thing that I see is that I’ve totally gained some weight since I’ve gotten married. Look how thin my face is! Thought the whole gaining weight thing after one gets married was a myth but it’s not! So I have a few things to take away from that: 1) eating home cooked meals with veggies every day doesn’t give someone better health and 2) eating frozen pizzas and fast food can’t be as bad as “they” say. Before I was married I ate HORRIBLY as a single guy — Taco Bell, Krystal, WHOLE large thin-crust pizza’s… the works — and see how I looked!? Now I’m married and now I have a double chin and I’m eating better than I’ve ever eaten before. Okay… MAYBE it’s not being married that is causing this weight gain but lack of exercise and I’m now 30 years old!

Second thing I notice is a typical Heather-Rich thing. Notice that Heather is wearing a turtleneck and a jacket and I’m wearing a t-shirt! Heather is ALWAYS cold. That hasn’t changed a bit. What a cutie.

Back to the present day:

My best friend Jeff Read took me out to eat at Applebee’s last week. What an amazing friend. We’ve been friends since high school and will no doubt be friends till our dying breath. Just one of those friends that a person only has a few of in a life-time. Love you, bro. I didn’t have the camera with me but he had this really, really cool camera/PDA/camera phone that could literally do everything. Too bad it didn’t have a wide angle lens because I’d love to have gotten the Applebee’s sign. Thanks for the save and the memories, Jeff!

Roommate Reunion!

Last Friday night, my honey took me on a date and we had a great time. We split one of the brand new (incredibly yummy) pizzas at Panera first, and then headed to our wonderfully cheap theater here in town (that we affectionately call “The Two-Dollar Theater”). We watched “Over the Hedge” and absolutely loved it. My sister told me we had to see it and that it was hilarious, and she was right.

We got home and realized we had no pictures from the night, so I asked Rich if we could just take one or two. I thought we were taking a normal, sweet picture, but no! My husband was totally uncooperative (without my knowledge).

IMG_4549.jpg

So I looked at our digital camera screen after the first picture, and I caught on. No normal pictures tonight. So I gave in…

IMG_4550.jpg

If this is the way it’s gonna be, two can DEFINITELY play this game!

IMG_4551.jpg

Wow. I must have laughed too hard at Rich’s face in the previous picture, cause his feelings are hurt in this one…

IMG_4552.jpg

Then we did one of the cool spinny photos that Nathan showed us, but I think between the previous picture and this one, Rich must have had a little something to drink…ha! Maybe I should stop making fun of him and try to smile in a normal fashion while taking the picture AND making it do the cool spinny thing. Maybe it’s a little harder than it looks! Or maybe not…

IMG_4555.jpg

Ah! Now this is a little better…good job, honey!

IMG_4556.jpg

Then on Saturday, I was so happy to hear that Kyle and Heidi (a college roommate and good friend) were coming through town on their way to vacationing in Florida. Rich and I met up with them at Panera downtown and had breakfast together. We are very much hoping that Kyle and Heidi decide to move back to Chattanooga, as they are currently living in Indianapolis.

Here are a couple of shots we took downtown on Saturday morning…

IMG_4557.jpg

IMG_4558.jpg

Then we took a goofball picture, and apparently, Heidi thought it would be funny to close her eyes AND stick out her tongue. She’s just crazy ;) Somehow I managed to look scared and appalled at the same time!

IMG_4559.jpg

Then we headed to Trevor and Briana’s (another college roomate and good friend) place in St. Elmo. We had been there for about a half hour when Heidi decided she couldnt take it any longer, and she HAD to tell us the news. She told us that Bailey, their dog, was going to have a little brother or sister. So Briana asked a clarifying question: “You’re gonna get another dog?” When Heidi smiled and shook her head, Briana said, “You’re pregnant?”

And then we jumped up and down and hugged and congraulated while our husbands sat there, looking on with astonishment at the instantaneous transformation of 25 year old women into giddy little girls. Here are a few shots of our time at Bri and Trevor’s after we found out Heidi’s happy news.

IMG_4563.jpg

I think my husband should be a photojournalist. Check out his ability to tell a story as it unfolds…

IMG_4565.jpg

IMG_4567.jpg

Even Bailey was excited. She is hoping for a little sister to play with!

IMG_4577.jpg

The guys gathered in a safe place in the room while their wives celebrated with each other…

IMG_4582.jpg

And in closing, a self-portrait of the gals…

IMG_4579.jpg

Congratulations, Kyle and Heidi!!!

2 Year Anniversary!

Today (the 14th) is mine and Heathers two year anniversary. Definitely the most amazing two years of my life. My wife is indeed the most amazing girl that God has ever created. The way she loves me is astonishing and so humbling to me. She sacrifices constantly for me and always puts me before herself. I love her SO much and I want the whole world to know!

There is truly no sunset that is more beautiful than her. No chipmunk that’s cuter than her. No light brighter than her. There no one that is quicker to forgive and to understand. She’s always consciously bettering herself as a wife by being in the Word and learning at the feet from wise women and men such as Beth Moore, Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Shaunti Feldhahn, Focus on the Family, and Family Life Today. She really wants to attend “Weekend to Remember” so that we can just in another way grow in our marriage. She learns from wonderful women around her that live godly lives such as her mom, my mom, Christi Engels, Lisa Hickman, Kathy Johns, Valerie Moon, and so many, many others. She’s an amazing friend to others and a perfect best friend for me. She’s frugal. She’s generous. She’s compassionate. She’s caring. She’s loving. She’s strong, wise, humble, modest, meek, brave, disciplined, honest, selfless, patient, constantly growing, and encouraging. She sets the example for so many kids in our youth group and every person that she comes into contact with. She is beautiful beyond any words. She’s the only person I know that can be downright cute and downright sexy at the exact same time.

I’m constantly humbled by her love for me. She makes me want to be a better man. My love for her stretches the very capacity of my heart until I sometimes feel like I’m going to burst and scream about my love for this woman. My heart still races around her. My passion for her grows every day. I ache when I’m not with her.

I’m the stubborn one. I so quickly get into a routine. My days run together. I forget how precious each day is. I forget to tell her too many times what she means to me. She, on the other hand, is quick to teach me about the word “special”. She makes me know that I’m the only guy for her. She makes my chest puff up. I’m proud to be with her and be seen with her. She doesn’t hold a grudge and is so quick to forget my faults. She really is so Christ-like in all her doings. She tangibly gives me small examples of how Christ deals with me on a daily basis.

How can I NOT love this woman!? She truly is incredible. She truly is the only girl for me. She is irreplaceable and extremely precious to me. She truly is a princess… a daughter of God and so often I don’t treat her as such. But she doesn’t look for ways to be offended at my shortcomings since she’s so busy loving me!

Two years. Twenty years. Forty years. I will always feel the same! Babe, may we continually look toward Christ to fill our hearts with love for Him. Our infinite Father and our infinite Savior that has infinite love for us! Constantly and continuously drawing us closer to Him creates ways for us to reflect His love infinitely in us and beyond our capacity.

I love you, sweets! Happy Anniversary!

Fun Monday!!!

This past Monday, Rich and I got to join our friends Nathan and Amber Holritz on thier “Fun Monday” excursion! We have really enjoyed getting to know them lately, and have such an appreciation for their parenting and their awesome family! Austen and Addison are two of the cutest, most well-behaved, pleasant kids we’ve ever known! Since they work so diligently throughout the week, Nathan and Amber began a tradition that they call “Fun Monday.” It consists of them spending time together as a family every Monday and going various neat places…sometimes in Chattanooga, sometimes they travel elsewhere for the day. The kids love it, and it allows them to spend quality time together on a consistent basis.

I met up with them at the Aquarium after I got off work at 3, and we spent two hours enjoying all the amazing sea creatures. Addison just recently began walking, so it was the family’s first time at the aquarium with Addison walking!!! Here we are looking at one of the exhibits together…

z47894077.jpg

And Austen with a beautiful butterfly in the butterfly garden. Wow…such an amazing place!

z47894186.jpg

Here’s Addison admiring the huge sea turtles…she can even say “turtle,” and it’s the cutest thing ever!

z47894152.jpg

Then Nathan and Amber ran into a client of theirs, Michelle, who gave a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the huge shark tanks. We enjoyed the neat information, and took a picture…but Nathan accidentally cut me out of it!

z47894612.jpg

So here I am pouting that I didn’t get to be in the fun group shot…and Austen was even sad for me!

z47894755.jpg

After the aquarium, we went to El Meson, a fun Mexican restaurant where we met up with Rich once he got off work, and we were serenaded by four little Mexican men :) Then we went back to Nathan and Amber’s place and got to look at tons of photos from wedding, engagement, and baby sessions that they have shot over the years. I could have sat and looked for HOURS. Their home is beautiful, and they keep their work all over the walls since their business is home-based and they have clients over on a regular basis.

Here we are LATE at night after a few hours of conversation and a hilarious game…

z47894839.jpg

Nathan taught us how to give self-portraits this really cool spinny, blurry feel…

z47894874.jpg

He took a couple while showing Rich how…

z47894909.jpg

Then Rich tried it out and it didn’t really work ;)

z47894954.jpg

Still didn’t work…

z47895023.jpg

So they showed us the kissing spinny self portrait…

z47895190.jpg

And we got it! Yay! I think my husband is a pretty darn good multi-tasker!!!

z47895263.jpg

Thanks for an incredible “Fun Monday,” guys! We had a blast!

Weekend Fun

I have a couple of weeks to update, so I will breeze through these…

Rich wanted to see Superman again (okay, I did too!), so we headed back to the theater (where we rarely go in the first place because we hate to pay ridiculous amounts of money to watch movies) to catch the “man in tights” for the second time. This time, with Mikey and Naomi. We grabbed dinner first and then enjoyed the movie and the great company. Very fun…

IMG_4493.jpg

Then on Saturday night, we went down to Coolidge park for the “Movies in the Park” series in July. I wish we could have gone to more of them, but this is the only Saturday in July that we were able to go. We hooked up with Chris and Jennifer and barely watched any of the movie (Cheaper by the Dozen II) since we were talking. I love the idea of family friendly movies in the park for when we have kids…just so fun! And being under the stars with the man I love is very romantic…

IMG_4494.jpg

With Chris and Jennifer…who were very impressed with Rich’s ability to take great self-portraits! We just tell everyone we learned it from Nathan and Amber, some unbelievably talented photographer friends of ours!

IMG_4498.jpg

Then this past weekend (August 4-6), Jeff and Jackie (Rich’s brother and his wife) spent moving into their new home in Cleveland, TN. We are SO excited for them! They bought a home not far at all from their apartment in Cleveland, but now they are homeowners and have SO much more space to enjoy. On Friday night we all went to dinner at Logan’s and failed to take ANY pictures! Humph! We don’t even have a good pictures of the house yet, but we will soon. Here we are in their new kitchen…

IMG_4501.jpg

Sweeties…

IMG_4503.jpg

And on Saturday night we had Jason and Kellie over. The Dykast’s moved here from Corvallis, Oregon in March to begin a Calvary Chapel in Cleveland, TN. I have SO enjoyed spending time with Kellie, so Rich and I were excited for the opportunity to have them over for dinner and a game night!

IMG_4508.jpg

We had Rich’s delicious honey terriyaki grilled chicken and got to hear Jason and Kellie’s story over dinner and how it was that they came to move across the country. It was a great time, and what really impressed me was their willingness to consider when and where God was leading. They never would have considered moving to the East Coast until God placed in on their hearts, and they chose to listen and pray…and here they are! I am convinced that God is glorified when we make a move (often a sacirifical one), on the basis of His leading and prompting. It will be neat to watch what God does with Calvary Cleveland!

Then we busted out “Cranium” — a board game of which I am a big fan!!! We played couples against each other, and it made for a fun dynamic. See, not knowing Jason and Kellie very well, we thought maybe Kellie was over-exaggerating when she told us that Jason was a really good “guesser”…but we soon found out that was not the case. In fact, I think it was an understatement. With most of their turns, Kellie would perform the action, and within about twenty seconds, Jason would be spitting out the right answer…which would leave Rich and I with our mouths hanging open, stupified. Even when she hadn’t had enough time to fully draw or act out, he would guess correctly! So I am thinking next time we will have to split Jason and Kellie up and play girls against guys :)

Oh, and for anyone wondering…they won. But not by much! Rich and I had made it into the “winner’s circle” or the “cranium” or whatever you call it!

IMG_4514.jpg

Here’s Kellie acting something out…I can’t remember what exactly, but I am sure Jason guessed it immediately and they got to move forward!

IMG_4512.jpg

Oh! I can’t forget to mention the AMAZING frozen mud pie dessert that they made for the night! All I know is that it involved Starbucks Java Chip Ice Cream and it was one of the more yummy desserts I’ve ever had. I have definitely polished off what they left for us! Thanks for a great night, guys!

Update on Dominican Wedding!

Well, the team just got back from the Dominican Republic late Sunday, and the wedding pictures were too good not to post.

Here are Brad and Valerie on their wedding day…
