October Fun!

Wow. We’ve been bad bloggers lately. It has been an interesting and challenging month, actually. But more on that later. I will write a post soon about what’s been going on regarding my back pain. For now, be sure to check out both blog posts that I just published!

On Sunday Rich and I had a super enjoyable and relaxing day together. After the awesome church service and hearing all about the Romania team mission update, we headed off to utilize the Rock City Corn Maze tickets I won from a drawing at my chiropractor. I win things frequently, by the way, but that’s a whole other blog post! And no, I will not purchase a lottery ticket for you! Shame on you for asking!

For those of you out-of-towner’s who are not aware, Rock City itself is on Lookout Mountain, which sits in Chattanooga and shares it’s property between Georgia and Tennessee. For many years and for hundreds of miles surrounding Chattanooga, red barns (like the one below) along highways and rural roads boast this “See Rock City” message for travelers to see. I love noticing new barns every time I travel in the area.

So we arrive and set off to conquer the maze!

We periodically come upon these signs, and taking the correct direction is contingent upon answering the questions accurately. So we stop and ponder the trivia…

_MG_5797

We decide that the NFL record for the longest field goal is indeed 63 yards, so we choose “c” and continue on our way…

{side note: my dad would be so proud! All those years of father-daughter bonding while rooting for our team (the Miami Dolphins) has paid off. It has endowed me with random statistics that would one day allow me to navigate through this corn maze. End of side note}.

_MG_5800

We stop for a little view of the fall trees…

_MG_5792

And I get distracted, momentarily thinking that I am modeling among corn stalks and not simply trying to find my way out of a dumb maze…

_MG_5789

And Rich gets distracted, with delusions that I am a maiden in distress who needs to be rescued from enemy corn husks. He pulls a Jet Li move and I catch it just in time to share it with you.

_MG_5803

More pretty trees…and we find our way out of the maze in about an hour! So what that the average time people took was 45 minutes! We had a good time!

Also this weekend, Kyle and Heidi were back in town since they just bought a house here in Chattanooga! Yay! Congratulations again, guys! They are pregnant with their first child, Kyle just started a new job, they bought a house (and are ambitiously renovating), and Heidi is valiantly completing schooling before the baby comes in April… all the while they are commuting between Indianapolis and Chattanooga for the home-buying process. We are praying for them!!! Kyle lived with us for a couple of weeks while trying to close on the house, and he was the lowest maintenance house guest ever! Very impressive.

So, Bri and Trevor had us over this weekend and we had a blast together, as usual. Here we are after a round of Cranium…Bri and Trevor managed to accrue tons of luck and beat us all. ;) Rich and I managed to get slaughtered by both teams - we chalk it up to poor luck as it related to the feisty dice.

I didn’t get a chance to post a couple of pictures that I took earlier in the month with Kellie. She and I went to an all-day scrapbooking event and had SO much fun! We have very different scrapping styles, so it’s always a ton of fun to scrapbook with her and be challenged to think outside my creative box and repertoire of ideas. I LOVE spending time with her scrapbooking or not!

We went shopping a bit afterwards and we saw the ugliest skirt ever at Target. Honestly, this skirt was so ugly that I just felt compelled to put it on and take a picture. No, not in the dressing room. In the middle of the clothing section of Target over my jeans. We laughed so hard and wondered if people would actually buy one of these. If you like this skirt and would consider buying one, please don’t tell me. I would rather not know.

Fun Family Shots!

I came across these shots from last Christmas when my family came to Chattanooga for the week and wanted to post them since they are so fun! Rich and I had just started blogging in October of last year (it’s been one year now!), and weren’t yet putting pictures on our blog at the time, so these didn’t get the attention they deserved!  I miss you guys and can’t wait to see you again!!!
Mom, dad, and Shawn came up from Fort Lauderdale for Christmas last year, and Amber and Jonathan drove the ridiculous distance from South Dakota, where they have lived since they got married. We had such an amazing time together, and this was such a fun series of shots we got downtown, just before saying the always dreaded yet inevitable “goodbye.”

The whole crew…

At the skatepark…

Rich here. I’m mostly writing this blog for my little bro in South Florida. I think (hope) he’ll appreciate this since he’s all things athletic. We miss him terribly and can’t wait to see him again this Christmas!

Last Thursday, I got to meet up with my good friend Matt Dunmore at Starbucks to go shooting (not guns… cameras). Matt is simply a photographer through and through and he’s excellent at it (which helps). I believe his greatest talent is to make ANYTHING… even mundane things… look really interesting. It’s refreshing to see. He maintains a photoblog (he posts a picture a day on it) which I would encourage anyone to put in their bookmarks to visit everyday.

Also at Starbucks I had the privilege to meet Jeff Breedlove who is an aspiring wedding photographer and an all around really nice guy. He’s so nice I can forgive him for shooting with a Nikon.

Here’s Jeff:

Here’s Matt (on the right) and some guys shooting the breeze:

The guys showing off their pics

Since we met at 7:30 at Starbucks, after we met everyone and got a general idea who everyone was, it was definitely dark outside. So we decided to go to a local skatepark where one of Matt’s friends was playing rollerhockey. We totally ignored his game and concentrated on all the kids skateboarding — no offence David!

Here at the skateboarding park, I learned a few things. One, all the kids were super nice. Two, they love cameras and will amp up their skateboarding, hotdogging it so that we could get a great shot of them and immediately show it to them afterwards. Three, it’s impossible for these kids to get hurt. I’m sure their bones are made of rubber. Four, I’m old.

Here are some shots I took:

Jeff getting a shot

Jordan below was a really neat kid. He was telling me all of the sponsors he’s gotten in the short 2 years he’s been skating. All the big names like Oakley are sponsoring him. Not bad for a 14 year old! Nice kid! Delusional… but really nice. I’m probably going to get this photo printed and take it to him since he’s out there all the time.

This kid was only 12 years old and been skating for 1 year! He did the “Michael-Jordan-tongue-hanging-out-of-the-mouth” thing every time he jumped. One of these days he’s going to forget to stick that thing back in before he hits the ground! Neat kid but totally forgot his name.

I thought for sure someone was going to die. This one crazy kid (freshman in college) was doing backflips on his bike up a ramp. I knew it was only a matter of time before he lost an appendage (like his head). Matt and Jeff now call me “old man” because every time a kid fell down my automatic response without fail was to say “Are you okay? You be careful out there, all right?” Then I’d cringe afterwards. Have I gotten to THAT age!? It got to the point that I’d hear myself saying it and stop in mid-sentence. Thankfully though, the kids didn’t seem to mind my concern. They were convinced that we were with the paper and all the photos we shot were going to be in the paper the next day. Hilarious.

Matt graciously allowed me to use his lenses. One of the coolest his has is this 15mm fisheye lens. I got on top of the ramp, stuck the camera above my head and the photos makes it look like I’m like 20 feet in the air shooting down. It was definitely fun to play with.

Matt Watching

To see some of Matt’s pictures from that night, head over to this post on his blog. You’ll see the crazy guy doing crazy things on his bike! We had a great time. Lots of laughs and we got to meet a lot of really neat people. Can’t wait until next time!

Beauty

Okay, I am just going to let this 1 minute video speak for itself…I think it is just that good.

I Peter 3:3-4 “Do not let your adornment be merely outward - arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel - rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with in incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.”
Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord shall be praised.”

Photo Shoot!!!

Last Friday, we went downtown Chattanooga for an incredible, fun time with Nathan and Amber Holritz, good friends and amazing photographers. We had so much fun, and love the creative, artful shots they captured. Here are some of them, and there will be more to come!!!

Nathan and Amber, we are so thankful for your friendship! We have so enjoyed getting to know you and love being around your genuine family. We love your zest for life and for people, and we love your authenticity. It’s fun and easy to be around you two, and to be ourselves. That is a gift, for sure, and we do not take it for granted. And we will continue to nag you about writing a parenting book until you decide to do so…we are in love with Austen and Addison and want two kids just like them!!! It’s so refreshing to see a husband and wife who value each other and thier kids enough to make the family a priority and to be intentional…even amid all of the stress and busy-ness of your professional lives. We love you guys!!!

After shooting downtown near the awesome, old brick buildings, they took us to Coolidge Park for some lovely shots near the walking bridge. To me, this shot captures quintessential Chattanooga…I LOVE this city!!!

And we finished the evening on a grassy hill while the sun began to set. Nathan and Amber just blow us away with their eye for detail and their ability to use light and emotion.

As we finished, Rich got this beautiful shot of Nathan and Amber. Even though Rich is a Canon shooter, he was MORE than happy to use their gorgeous Nikon camera and lens to get this shot.

Then we headed to dinner at the Blue Plate, where we ended up telling fun and scary stories for a couple of hours. We said goodbye and then ended up going to Nathan and Amber’s house anyway and continued to laugh and enjoy the company.

Holritz Weekend!

Last Thursday, we met Nathan and Amber at Tony’s Pasta for dinner and talked and laughed while Rich did funny modeling poses and then we walked around a bit afterwards…

The Smiths and the Holritzs

Then, on Friday evening and Saturday morning, Rich and I went to our first marriage conference! It was called “Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage,” and it was awesome! The speaker, Mark Gungor, was HILARIOUS, but it was still so meaningful because he did such a good job of sharing truth and relevant insights for marriage God’s way. We highly recommend going if you get a chance. We had an incredible experience!

Here we are in front of the sign…

Saturday we got to babysit Austen and Addison while Nathan and Amber shot a wedding. We had a blast, and took the kids to dinner at Logan’s, where we took these pics…

Then on Sunday we got to go to a recepion at Greyfriars for Matt Dunmore, an incredibly talented photographer here in Chattanooga. Rich and I love checking out his blog and have been emailing back and forth for a while, so we really enjoyed meeting him and his wife! Here we are with Matt and the Holritz’s!

Matt and his gang

Afterwards we got to hang out with the Holritz’s again and walked all over downtown Chattanooga. It was a gorgeous evening, and we had a blast. We stopped by Coldstone for some ice cream and Rich got a ghostlike picture of Nathan and Austen…
