Welcome, Avery Kyle Posey!

Well, it has been quite an interesting weekend!

Bri and I have been planning a baby shower for our dear friend, Heidi, and we set the date for Saturday, March 3rd and mailed out the invitations, looking forward to getting friends and family together to shower Heidi with gifts.

However, in the middle of the night last Thursday, baby Posey decided that he was ready to enter the world 6 weeks early! So early Friday morning, Kyle and Heidi set out for Parkridge East.

Heidi thought she was just having false labor pains, but Kyle claims that he “just knew” that it was the real deal, and that they would be in the hospital until the baby was born!

Upon receiving Bri’s email on Friday morning at work that Heidi was actually in labor, I was shocked! I was excited and nervous at the same time, since Heidi was barely in the “safe zone” to deliver the baby! We prayed and kept praying on Friday morning, and then Bri and I headed over to visit Heidi during our lunch hour when Heidi was 4 cm dialated. She was as sweet and calm as usual, but in pain from contractions and, naturally, feeling a little unprepared to be in labor so soon!

Then Rich came back with me to visit on Friday evening and got these memorable photos…

We kept Heidi company and attempted to distract her from the contractions…

Here is sweet Heidi going through a tough contraction, focusing on her breathing, and trying to appreciate the ice chips when she was so hungry! She did such a great job during labor and we are all so proud of her!

We supplied Kyle with his favorite candy for the ordeal, dark chocolate m&m’s, and he was a great coach for Heidi and we know he will be a great dad!

After Rich and I left the hospital on Friday night, Heidi gave birth to a beautiful baby boy at about 11 PM!

Avery Kyle Posey weighed in at 5 lbs, 3 oz and is 18 inches long!

Since little Avery was born early, the Dr. is monitoring him so he will stay in I.C.U. for a couple of days until released to come home to be with mom and dad!

There are strict rules regarding the I.C.U., so unfortunately, Rich wasn’t able to go in to take pictures like he wanted to! Since the parents were the only ones allowed to take photos in there, Rich set up his camera and sent it in with Kyle (and Kyle’s parents) to grab some shots of little Avery…

Here I am with the brave mama! I love you, Heidi girl!

We are excited to be on this adventure with you! Congratulations!

Then the fun continued…

Since Avery was born before the shower, and Kyle and Heidi had no idea that he would be born so soon, they were totally unprepred for him at home!

So, Bri, Bethany and I ran off to Babies R Us! We printed off the registry and went crazy! We bought everything they need to get started, from preemie diapers and a diaper genie, to blankets, crib sheets, bathtub, and clothes. We spent about two hours shopping, and got to know several employees! They even offered to order pizza for us and we joked about needing to campout overnight!

To add a special touch for Heidi, we decided to use the wrapping station in the store to wrap every item we bought before taking it to their house. We laughed hysterically at our inferior wrapping abilities and had a great time.

Here we are after our excursion…with Bethany’s whole trunk full of baby supplies! Thanks to my honey for the cell phone picture when he came to pick me up!

True Friends…

Rich and I just returned from an awesome evening out with one of our favorite couples in the world. Kenny and Christi are true friends and we love them. Whenever we spend time with them, we are reminded of just how much God has blessed us.

Our lives have intersected in several ways, and we are so thankful for each avenue that God has opened for us to know them. I knew who Kenny and Christi were while living in Fort Lauderdale, but it’s easy to know “of someone” and not to know them well when you are part of a huge church like Calvary Fort Lauderdale. When the Engels decided to move to Chattanooga, I was excited for the opportunity to get to know them better.

Once in Chattanooga, Kenny began the youth program at our (still relatively new) church of Calvary Chattanooga, and Rich and I began serving as volunteer youth leaders. We were only dating at the time, and proceeded to get engaged while working under Kenny with the students. When it came time to decide who we wanted to marry us, we both felt overwhelmingly that it would be the most precious possible day if Kenny would officiate.

And officiate he did. He blew us away with the most personal, intimate, meaningful wedding ceremony we could have imagined. He blessed us that day, and he and Christi have continued to bless us each day we’ve spent with them since.

As newlyweds, we decided to get involved with a home group at church, knowing we wanted the true fellowship and growth that happens in that environment. We decided to drive the 45 minutes to Signal Mountain to join the Engels home group on Monday nights. It’s been an incredibly fulfilling, wonderful period of time with them as our small group leaders. Worth far more than the long Monday night drive time.

When we are with Kenny and Christi, we are with friends who genuinely care about us. We can talk about anything. We laugh hysterically. We sometimes cry. We grow and change and become more of who God made us to be. We are encouraged and affirmed. We worship. We chat and reminisce. We tell funny stories and make fun of ourselves. We learn about what godly parenting looks like and store their insights away for future reference! And we see a tangible example of what it looks like to walk through a trial with grace and strength.

It is God alone who is the author of this kind of friendship. We are in true community and are so in awe of all that God has done!

Here we are with Kenny and Christi after a delicious evening at Tony’s Pasta and then on to Rembrandt’s for coffee and dessert. Thanks for an incredible time, Kenny and Christi. We love you guys, and are blessed beyond words to know you!

Um…ya. What were we saying about that laughing hysterically part?  Kenny is definitely smooching Rich :)

Breezing right through…

bible-in-90-days.jpg

My boss caught wind of a bible that Zondervan recently published, called “The Bible in 90 Days.” As indicated by the title, the goal set forth by the creators of this particular bible reading plan is “To read attentively every word of the bible in 90 days.”

{Side note: It’s actually a really cool story about how the creator of this reading plan, Ted Cooper, Jr., went from being agnostic to believer as a result of reading through the entire bible at this pace. End of side note}

So, my boss decided to pitch the challenge to his friends and family, and to me, his assistant. I was reluctant at first, because I don’t like to agree to something until I’ve decided for myself whether or not it will be feasible. Ah hem…I don’t prefer failure.

It took a little promping, but he had convinced me within about 15 minutes that accepting this challenge would be beneficial for a multitude of reasons. When I excitedly agreed, he told me, “Good! I have two copies on hold at Lifeway. One for you and one for me. Do you want to pick them up on your way home?”

Ha! Sounds like my mind had been made up for me!

I began this accelerated reading plan on February 1 and have read through Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, and I’m currently breezing through 1 Samuel, and it’s only February 23rd. This is a change for me, because the way I am used to reading my bible is to stop and linger, to underline and highlight. With the 90 day plan, my goal has been altered: I simply read straight through (being sure to comprehend, of course).

What I LOVE about this method of reading the bible is that I am seeing and understanding so much more. I’m more in awe of our great God. I didn’t realize that I had sacrificed so much continuity in my reading, since I read a chapter here and a couple of chapters there. Reading through at this pace allows for so much more fluidity concerning who God is and what He was doing. It’s amazing! For me, the biblical accounts have been much more holisitc and powerful!

Now don’t get me wrong…there is (obviously) nothing wrong with reading the bible at a slower pace, but I am so excited and energized by this that I want to challenge you to do it as well! If you take the challenge, please keep me posted! I want to hear your insights and gleanings!

Like I mentioned, Zondervan came out with a bible specifically designed for this 90 day reading plan, but you do not have to purchase it to participate. All you need is your own bible and this downloadable bookmark (that has the daily reading agenda) that you an print by clicking here.

Happy reading!

OSP South Redux!

Recently Rich and I blogged about our experience modeling for OSP South, a photography conference that took place here in Chattanooga. One of the wonderful people that we met was Carole Foret, an incredibly talented painter and photographer from Athens, Alabama. Carole has launched a beautiful new website featuring her work, and we wanted everyone to check it out! Click here to enjoy her painting and photography, and she features some of her photos of Rich and I if you enter her main site and watch while the photos and paintings cycle through! She was such a pleasure to meet and we so admire her work!

We had previously posted some of the photos that were taken of us that weekend, and we have some more favorites to share! These images were taken by Charles Bordner of Imagine That Photography, based out of Greenville and Charleston, South Carolina!

We love Charles’s work and the fun interaction he got between us!

steak and potatoes…and a happy surprise!

It occurred to me this evening that I left “generosity” off the long list of admirable attributes that I assigned to Rich yesterday in my tribute.

After our exquisite candlelit dinner of steak and red potatoes (grilled by Rich),

[img_7933][Rich+and+Heather

sparkling pomegranate juice (store-bought by Heather),

[IMG_7930][Rich+and+Heather

and made-from-scratch cookie dough cheesecake (by the two of us last night),

[IMG_7934][Rich+and+Heather

I handed my Valentines card to my valentine, who was sitting across the table from me, chatting about the intricacies of steak preparation.

[IMG_7942][Rich+and+Heather

He opened his card, read my heartfelt ramblings, and hastily thanked me for the card. He then got a sneaky grin on his face, jumped up, and disappeared out the front door, apparently on his way to retrieve something from his red Rodeo.

I sat inside picking at the last few bites of my cheesecake, willing myself to stop eating since I was completely, undeniably full. “But it’s cheesecake” I whined to myself. Full or not, how can I say no to two of my favorite things: homemade cookie dough and Rich’s cheesecake? It’s a dangerous combination, and could easily suffice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner until polished off and gone from my refrigerator.

I wonder what he is doing out there, I mused…

Back inside the house, Rich ran to our study, claiming he had to “sign the card,” and emerged with an even sneakier grin than before. Handing the card to me, he stood and watched me intently, awaiting the hug I was sure to give.

And hug him I did. An hour long massage from a local spa just made my day. No, my week. Uh, my month.

Yes, this gift just made my February.

[img_7937][Rich+and+Heather

Rich knows that if we were wealthy, the thing that I would be most excited about is to have regular massages. Massages are particularly wonderful for someone like me, who gets tension headaches on a regular basis and who is in constant need of a good massage. On the rare occasion that I splurge on one, I leave feeling like nothing could possibly ever go wrong for the rest of my life. I think some chemical is released in my brain, much like when we women enjoy good chocolate, or get gorgeous flowers.

All I know is that it has been a very wonderful evening and I am completely blessed.

[img_7923][Rich+and+Heather

From Rich:

Isn’t my wife amazingly beautiful? She would never put this picture of herself on here but I’m sneaking it on. Shhhh! :)

[IMG_7919][Rich+and+Heather

A tribute to my valentine…

Some of you may remember Rich’s amazing blog post to me on our 2 year anniversary. This post is not my feeble attempt to one-up him, but rather it is my desire to scream to the world how much I love this man that God has given to me!

We don’t do much in the way of gift-giving on Valentines Day (I far prefer to be surprised by a romantic date or getaway on some random day), but I definitely get to thinking about this love of mine during this time of the year. So here are a few of my ponderings…counting my blessings, if you will. My love-induced musings…

My husband is one of the wisest men I know. I love being the one who knows him best! It’s like I am perpetually let in on the secret of who he is and I’m always impressed by what I discover.

He is fun-loving, people-oriented, kind, gracious, and engaging. He is mature and responsible. He takes care of me and I always feel protected. He understands what it means to be completely faithful and reject any behavior that would make me feel threatened or unloved. He lets me know that I am truly cherished and appreciated. He thanks me on a regular basis for who I am and for being easy to get along with. He is so appreciative of the little things that I do, which makes it easy and enjoyable for me to be his wife.

I love and respect him not because he demands my love or respect, but because he loves me well and is confident in our love. He is a servant leader. He is patient. He makes me laugh uncontrollably.

He brags on me in public. It’s embarrasing.

He knows my flaws and my shortcomings, but I guess he talks to God about those things because he sure doesn’t make a habit of pointing them out to me. He is affirming and so far from being critical and condescending. He doesn’t dwell on (or remind me of) my weaknesses. He’s up evey morning spending time with God before I’m awake.

He goes out of his way to make me dinner if I am sick (the man can cook!), give me a massage if I have a headache, or ask if there is anything he can do for me. In fact, that question is a regular fixture in his daily vocabulary.

The only explanation I have for this enormous blessing is that my parents prayed for a godly future spouse for me ever since I was young. This man is truly proof that God answers and honors those prayers!

Sweetie, today I want you to know how much I love you, appreciate you, and respect you! You are my hero. I want to be by your side for every Valentines Day for the rest of my life. I love you.

The Bergtholds

It’s official. Rich Smith Photography is now a reality! And what a wonderful first photo shoot we had!

Heather and I cannot express how much we have enjoyed getting to know the Bergthold Family. We arrived for the photo session on Saturday afternoon and were greeted by two of the sweetest, most polite girls we’d ever met. Lyssa and Laini are truly beautiful, inside and out, and they definitely love their 4 month old brother, Levi, very much! Scott and Kristy are so kind and welcoming, and have provided such an atmosphere of love and fun in their home, as you will see in these photos and in the slideshow below!!!

Snowy Day!

You have to take pictures when it snows in Chattanooga, because it doesn’t happen too often! Such was the case last Thursday, when we awoke to a clean, untouched layer of white all over the city. I got dressed quickly, as if the snow was going to vanish within minutes. Rich and I headed out front to enjoy the beauty, but the only deterrent was that it began to sleet. Yes, our snow playtime was very short-lived, and back inside we came to get warm and dry off. I was very excited that the snow stuck all day, and although I was hoping for some accumulation, I was thrilled with the one day of white.

I had quite a different experience in my four years at Covenant College up on Lookout Mountain. Although the mountain sits in Chattanooga, with it’s thousand foot elevation it is consistently cooler and snows more often than it does down here in the valley. I miss that about my college days. And you can be sure I didn’t experience any snow days living in South Florida before moving to Tennessee! :)

Ah, the glory of a good snow day…

This is one of the two lantern lampposts in our front yard, and I think they are so beautiful, especially when snow-topped. I thought they were very Narnia-esque…

Reece and Evan

A couple of weekends ago, Rich and I were able to babysit for Tim and Steph while they went on a romantic getaway for their 5 year anniversary. While holding down the fort with Reece and Evan, Rich managed to utilize the incredible morning light at the house and get some priceless pictures of the kids. They aren’t lacking in personality, and they are ALL BOY!!! Hard to keep up with and very adventurous!

The funniest memory from the weekend was when Evan walked sleepily into the bedroom at about midnight and stood by the bed until Rich was awake enough to remember that we were in fact babysitting, and that there was in fact a kiddo wanting up on the bed with us! Once on the bed between us, Evan fell asleep and spent the rest of the night cuddling with me, snoring, and gritting his teeth. It was a temporary inauguration into motherhood, complete with sleep deprivation!!!

Here are the fun shots from the weekend!

This is Reece, with his beloved animal crackers!
