water baby

Kellie and I spent all day together yesterday, while Rich busied himself with another wedding. We worked on several wonderful projects, which I will post about very soon on my craft blog!

But for now, I just had to post these photos of Alana’s first time ever in a pool!

Kellie and I took a break after hours of sewing pillows and coasters (again, more on that soon!) to run over to Clark and Maureen’s pool. And of course, we documented this momentous occasion with many a photo and even several video clips :)

Alana was VERY apprehensive at first. As I waded into the pool, which was a very comfortable temperature, she started to whimper and then just began crying. But we gave it a bit longer, and she gradually acclimated to the whole idea of a much bigger, slightly cooler bathtub!

Ten minutes after the first video of her initial reaction (crying), Kellie grabbed the camera again for another video, because Alana had calmed down and even began to splash the water with her hands. After another ten minutes had passed, she was outright enjoying herself! She let me gently glide her through the water as she cooed and babbled, and she even began to kick her little legs! It was soooo cute. But I’m her mom…so of course I’m smitten with everything she does :)

I’ll stop rambling and just post the fun pictures!

Before braving the water…

At the beginning: pensive and very concerned!

Then: having fun in the water!

P6280129

Kellie even used my underwater point and shoot to grab some chubby baby leg pictures! So fun!

Winding down and relaxing. I think she’ll be a little fish when she gets older.

P6280165

Thank you again for the day of perfection, Kellie!

And thank you to Clark and Maureen for the use of their beautiful pool! We had a blast!

And a side note for everyone who loves Etsy! As my blog readers are aware, Kellie has an Etsy Store called Every Jot and Tittle with amazing, creative paper products. I wanted to announce that she just launched another Etsy store with super cute stuff, so you must go check it out! it’s called 2 Pear, and it will be a fun assortment of goodies, both handmade and not.

june days…

Well, this first photo (from last week) goes out to my sister, Alana’s “Aunt Pixie.” It was given so that Alana could proudly sport Black Hills State University, where Amber just graduated.

Thank you again for the onesie, Amber! Doesn’t she look cute in it? Little collegiate babe :)

P6050067

P6050068

And the photo below just happens to be another onesie that deserves special mention. My mom’s dear friend Sheri got this for Alana, and it finally fits her! Thank you so much for the onesie, Sheri! We love it, and Alana is getting tons of use (and laughs) out of it! :)

Sheri is part of my mom’s serious group of girlfriends. When I look on at the love and support that they give each other, I know that I want that exact same thing for my life. These ladies epitomize friendship by doing all of the things that make girlfriends so great. They laugh and cry together, they spoil each other on birthdays, they help each other plan their sons and daughters weddings, they work and play together, and even get away in October for a girls retreat. Now that is an enviable thing in life.

Although I must say, it is no surprise that my mom maintains such great friendships. She is a people magnet, and I know exactly why. It is because she is shockingly approachable and others-centered. In a world where self-absorption abounds, my mom knows how to be a genuine friend to someone.

Anyway, thank you for allowing the rabbit trail, and thank you again to Sheri for the onesie!

Last week was Kellie’s birthday, and Alana and I had the honor of spending the afternoon with her! We had a blast, as always. We love you, Kellie! We’re just gonna keep celebrating and say Happy birth-month!

I could not possibly state how much I appreciate Kellie. She is amazing. And I love her.

This little series of pictures cracked me up. Alana has started bouncing when she gets excited, and I mistakenly thought I’d try to capture a photo of the activity. Typically I wouldn’t post bad, blurry photos, but somehow it feels perfectly appropriate to post baby bouncing blurriness since the pictures convey the pure glee felt here by Alana:

And the new sleep position of choice. She rolled onto her stomach to nap a couple of weeks ago and hasn’t looked back. But the stomach-sleeping has morphed into this: now she tucks her little legs up underneath and stays this way the whole time the sleeps. Soincrediblycute. ah.

Here we are at Panera a few days ago getting to meet one of Rich’s clients, Kristen. Somehow we totally forgot to take a self-portrait with her, but you can check our their engagement session here if you’d like! Kristen, it was wonderful to meet you, and I am so excited about your upcoming wedding! Congratulations!!!

P6210003

I did snap a few photos of Alana perched in her high chair and tasting the table…

P6210006

Why play with toys when you can eat table tops?

P6210005

And on Saturday night we enjoyed a housewarming party for Mikie and Naomi. Rich and I considered it a mini-date since a friend of ours, Beth, played with Alana in another room for the majority of our visit!

On a side note, anyone who knows our good friend Shanika (who was a bridesmaid in our wedding!), be sure to go to Rich’s blog and check out the engagement photos that were just posted!!! And be sure to leave some “blog love” while you there, telling Rich what an amazing job he did! We are so excited about Ben and Shanika’s upcoming wedding!

And that is a little glimpse of our week :)

Stay tuned for some fun pictures soon, since my MOM is coming to town next week! She’ll be here for a week, and it will inevitably fly by. We will be sure to post lots of pictures from her visit and cannot WAIT to see her!!! Hurry up, mom!!!

a confession…

I know that I blog a lot, and it’s typically about the everyday aspects of life. I usually don’t use the blog as a venue to share the deeper things that are on my mind.

But tonight my heart is a bit heavy.

I have a confession: I cannot watch the news. I literally cannot handle the trauma and tragedy that is exposed in the news. Primarily what I cannot cope with is the news about babies and/or children being abused or neglected. And it’s all over the nightly headlines. I feel like every time I tune in, there are horrendous stories of babies/children who are physically, emotionally, or sexually abused. Precious, innocent little lives that are being forever altered as a result of sin.

I cringe, I tense up, and I cry.

I have always had a burden for children who don’t have parents to love and nurture them, but something has happened to me since I have become a mom. It’s gotten worse. Much worse. It’s something I don’t really talk about, but it’s always on my mind. I constantly think about this issue.

I remember the heartbreak I have felt while visiting orphanages on mission trips in other countries. Babies are left to cry all day long in their cribs because there aren’t enough adults to care for them. I cry when I think about it. It is such a helpless feeling, because the problem is so big. Nigh untouchable. I simply do not have the time, resources, or opportunity to cuddle all of them. To tell them they are precious.

When I look at my little Alana’s face, I think about the fact that she has a warm, cozy home to live in, a soft crib to sleep in, clean clothes to wear, diapers to keep her comfortable, sanitary water to drink, but most importantly, two parents who are crazy about her and hug and kiss her all day every day. It’s difficult to think about children who grow up without those conveniences, but it’s beyond comprehension those who grow up without love. Without knowing about God’s love, and without knowing the love of a mom and/or dad.

Truly, this has been such a struggle lately. I have been praying that God will give me peace, and remind me that this crazy place is not our home. And that he loves all of the little ones, in the entire world, more than I can imagine. I am just so eager for all of the hurting, unloved children to experience the amazing love of Jesus. Sometimes I am just so eager for heaven.

Rich and I want to adopt a child who would otherwise not be loved, but the hurdles seem so huge. Just the financial aspect of adoption alone is enough to totally overwhelm. I want to have faith that God will honor our desire and our stewardship.

I want to please God with the little one that He has entrusted to us, and to love with reckless abandon.

I love what the International Justice Mission, Gospel For Asia, Compassion International, World Vision, and countless other organizations are doing. I am so inspired and hopeful when I think about all of the wonderful people who are loving, protecting, and nurturing children for Jesus! Rich and I have been honored to sponsor two children through Gospel for Asia for the past few years, and I so strongly encourage everyone to do this!

And until every tear has been dried by their perfect daddy, I will pray for all of the precious children of the world.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…” James 1:27

baby kisses, fathers day fun, and diapers!

On Thursday last week, Kellie, Alana and I had a bit of girl fun time! You can read more on my craft blog, if you’d like! Kellie grabbed these photos of Alana and I, and I love them! Thank you so much, Kellie!

Alana has started to “kiss” me, or perhaps she’s just wondering what I taste like. Either way, it’s pretty darn endearing.

And slobbery :)

P6120020

P6120024

Alana’s new little puckered face. She’s done it incessantly starting last week, and I am guessing that she is starting to teethe…

P6120026

I’m trying to teach her modesty. Note the dress pulled all the way up.

P6140056

More mommy-tasting:

P6140058

Now that she’s gaining weight, I do believe her cheeks are starting to chub!

I love it!

P6140072

Then on Sunday, Rich’s first Father’s Day, Alana gifted him with the card below. Inside, she said,

“Dear daddy, I know I can’t talk yet, but soon I will be able to tell you how much I love you. You are the best daddy I could ever ask for. Happy First Father’s Day. Love, your little ‘Lana.”

P6160015

At church, we were so excited to see Randy and Charlotte (and little Ryan!) who were in town visiting, along with Chris’s wonderful parents! Little Tucker was even at church for the first time! Chris got to stand up - as the newest father in the entire church - little Tucker is only 7 weeks old! He didn’t get a gift, though I was thinking how nice it would have been if they’d given a bunch of diapers or something similarly appreciated by new parents :)

P6150086

Then we were off to meet up with Rich’s parents at O’Charley’s for a fantastic lunch! We thoroughly enjoyed the company, and gave dad his Father’s Day gift, the framed photo of Alana (from previous blog post) at his office. He loved it :)

P6150092

Once we were back home, I put Alana down on our love seat while I grabbed something in the kitchen. I am glad the camera was close by, because when I came back over…

P6150097

She had pushed herself up onto her hands and knees for the first time!

P6150098

I think we may have a crawler before too long! She just scooted back and forth for a moment and then plopped back down onto her stomach.

I cannot believe she will soon be mobile. I’m thinking of all the baby-proofing that needs to go on between now and then. Yikes.

P6150099

Then we dined on Rich’s requested dinner of Chicken Cordon Bleu with Rice Pilaf and corn, and chocolate chip pound cake for dessert. Yum. You can request that anytime, babe! Happy First Father’s Day, honey. We love you so much, and we think you are the best dad ever!!!

Cha-Ching. A depressing weekend purchase. If anyone drives by our house anytime soon and sees a foreclosure sign, it was the combination of these big yellow boxes and the cost of gas prices that did it to us ;)

P6150105

I will end with a question for all of you parents of young children out there: Rich and I have heard that the new, effective cloth diapers are super expensive, but if you are willing to pay on the front-end, they pay for themselves in a couple of months compared to the cost of disposable diapers. I’ve heard to stay away from the cheaper cloth diapers (that they sell at places like Babies R Us), because they leak constantly. Any cloth diaper people out there? Advice? Opinions?

Let’s have a diaper forum in the comment section, please!!!

Happy Father’s Day!

This little photo shoot was specifically orchestrated for my dad, an incredibly talented construction hero:

And this one goes out to Rich’s dad, a wonderfully talented engineer:

We love you both so much, and hope that you know how much you are appreciated!!!

And to all of the other dads our there, happy, happy Father’s Day!!!

heather’s new craft blog!

I’ll be honest: life has been stressful and much too busy lately.

For starters, my little babe is a great night sleeper, but doesn’t spend much time snoozing during the day. So, I obviously spend most of my daytime hours and energy caring for Alana. Then there are all of the necessary things in life that keep me busy: shopping, cooking, cleaning, and errand-running. Then there is the business. Don’t get me wrong: I’m thankful that Rich Smith Photography is crazy busy. But it definitely sucks what remaining time I have, since I am employed by my hubby as bookkeeper/office manager.

Enter craft time. Kellie and I get together every week that is humanly possible, even if only for a couple of hours. Our schedules are often hectic, but we make time to be together and talk, laugh, and almost always, we craft!

And so, I thought it completely high time to launch a blog in which I can decompress from the stresses of life. A place where I can talk about the latest projects, from scrapbooking, to sewing, to projects I’m planning, to products I love, to people who inspire me. I will be featuring friends of mine who are doing anything crafty or handmade, and stores that I love.

Come on over, grab a cup of coffee and please let me know what you think of the new blog!

I am soooooo excited to launch my craft blog!

And of course, feel free to subscribe (upper right hand) if you’ll want updates!

weekly tidbits!

We’ve been walking…despite the nearly intolerable heat that Chattanooga has boasted lately. Truly, I feel like an old person in this weather. It zaps my energy. I’ve seen people running outdoors lately and I seriously do not understand how a person could run in this weather. I can barely stand to walk the 1.2 mile perimeter of our neighborhood. Granted, we have some steeeeep hills, which only escalates one’s body temperature even more in this 100 degree heat.

I am a wuss. No, really, I am. I love pushing myself physically, but only in air conditioned places. That is why I have a gym membership. That may also pertain to why my favorite sport - and the one I played in high school and college - was volleyball. Let me clarify: indoor volleyball.

And so, here is my sweetheart with my sweetheart. I wish I’d been the one to invent the Baby Bjorn. It’s brilliant.

P6070019

Change of subject…little Alana decided just yesterday that she wanted to try something new: sleeping on her stomach! She has only ever slept on her back, and although she’s been able to roll over for a couple of months, has never done it in her crib.

But, I went to check on her during a nap yesterday, and this is what I found: sleeping on her stomach for the first time ever! You better believe that this nerd of a first time mom ran to grab her camera, and followed this photo with a brief video. Of a sleeping baby. Okay, so not much goes on in the video, but still! Wouldn’t you be entertained by a video of yourself sleeping on your stomach for the first time? :)

P6100002

My friend Kellie has great taste, and she bought this adorable shirt for Alana. It’s a 3 month shirt, but finally, it fits her! We love it, Kellie! Thank you so much!

P6100030

Bathtime has been such fun lately. Alana has learned to splash. When I get done bathing her, it looks as if I jumped right into the tub along with her. I remind myself to change into something I care nothing about before I give Alana her bath now!

And this cute little pink toy that is attached to the bathtub is now the bain of my existence. Alana loves it so much that she wants to chew on it the entire duration of her bath…all while I attempt to wash her hands, arms, and neck. Let’s just say it’s a power struggle :)

congrats, baby brother!

Well, I just got an email from my mom with several photos of my little brother’s middle school graduation speech. I teared up looking at them, and decided I needed to emote by posting a blog about him.

So, this one goes out to you, Shawnie. I love you from the deepest parts of me, and could not be more proud. You are the very best bro that a sis could have.

I also want you to know that I hate, hate, hate that we live twelve hours away and I can’t come see all of your sports events, plays, and now this, your graduation from middle school. I would be there for every single thing if we lived closer.

I think about you, pray for you, and know that God has great - very great - things in store for your life. You are kind, hilarious, full of life, athletic, and intelligent, but don’t let all of that go to your head. Keep treating people with love and respect. Even the ones you may not like. You will continue to have many friends in life if you keep it up.

I wanted to post a the graduation photos mom sent me, because I love them. I hope you don’t mind. You look like you should be graduating from high school, not middle school. Soon you will be as tall as Rich and the two of you can try to beat each other up.

Rich and Alana.

Wow, I love these two.

P5260050

One of the highlights from the past couple of weeks was going to visit Jeff and Jackie and their new little Adeline. Alana was particularly intrigued by this creature who was smaller than her. I set her down so she could see the baby, and in keeping with her habitual mentality of everything-exists-so-that-I-can-put-it in-my-mouth, we caught her trying to eat Adeline feet!

P5280077

P5280073

What, mom? I can’t eat my cousin’s feet? What’s up with that?

P5280076

Jeff and Jackie, we are so thankful that you are all doing well, and it was great to see you guys!

On Tuesday, Alana and I spent all day with Kellie, as usual, and had enormous fun. More on that soon! We are working on all kinds of fun projects that I will post about!

A little Kellie time!

P5270055

Does anyone interpret baby faces? What on earth does this one mean??? She’s been doing this lately; biting her bottom lip and making her cheeks puff out. It’s hilarious, and I love it.

P5270058

Playtime! Alana is getting much better at independent play. For a while there (and still intermittently) she cried every time I left the room and was pretty attention-addicted. This is the prerogative of the firstborn, I guess! There are no other siblings to compete for mom and dad’s attention, so they tend to be a bit more egocentric than subsequent kiddos! I can critique firstborns because I am one! I also have tons of positive insights about firstborns, but we’ll save that for another post! :)

P5290093

P5290094

I haven’t grabbed too many sleeping babe shots lately, so I thought I’d share one:

P5290084

Ladies and gentlemen, she has found her feet!

And found them to be rather tasty:

{yuck}

P5290111

This little bouncy seat is where I put Alana in the mornings after I’ve fed her, and then I go into the kitchen to get my own breakfast. Last weekend, Rich and I walked back into the living room from the kitchen and found Alana totally sideways in her seat. It’s the first time she has completely reoriented herself, and I thought it was super cute and rather comical!

P6010124-1

P6010129-1

P6010133-1

sweet little face…

P6020148

So, recently while on the changing table, Alana noticed the tube of Balmex. Not only did she notice it, but now she wants to play with it every time I change her diaper. So, when I need it, I have to fight her for it! I took it away from her after taking the photo below, and she had a little fit!

So, what in the world do you do with a six-and-a-half-month-old when they scream because they want something? She doesn’t understand the word “no” yet (though believe me, I will keep trying!), and you can’t spank when they don’t know what they are doing wrong yet, but we certainly want to nip temper tantrums in the bud!

For now, it’s just so funny and I have to bite my lip to keep from laughing.

P6040019

This is Alana’s first ride in the stroller like a BIG girl! No carseat, just sitting on the main stroller seat, all strapped in! She reclined a bit, stuck her feet on the front bar, and smiled. Our neighborhood is so full of hills that I kept thinking she would just topple out while we were going downhill. She was just fine, of course, and seemed to love every second!

P6050069

holy cow, I think she’s snarling!

P6060080

Also this week, Alana and I got to visit the Posey’s and their new, precious baby Madelyn. They are doing great, and the baby is absolutely adorable with a head full of hair. Alana actually looked big to me sitting right near a newborn!

P6060084

Congratulations, Kyle and Heidi! She is perfect! We are so happy for you! And thank you for letting us come hang out…we had a wonderful time!

on the other side of the camera…

Rich had the pleasure of doing a family session for our good friends, the Holritz’s. The first family session they’ve had a long, long time! They’re always operating on the other side of their cameras, and it was time to provide them with some fun family shots in their home.

I thought I would share a few on our personal blog since they are such dear friends, and since my blog audience perpetually sees our family sessions that Amber has done for us! Here are Nathan and Amber, along with their amazing kids, Austen and Addison!

There are tons more, and a fabulous slideshow, on Rich’s blog!
