Baby Alana: 8 Month Session!!!

Once again, here is a view of our family through the lens of Amber Holritz. Alana has changed so much since her 6 month session that we knew it was time to document her again!

Enjoy just a few here, but then be sure to head on over to Holritz Photography to see the rest! Click through the gallery view and then turn up your speakers and enjoy the slideshow!

Yes, that is another canvas gallery wrap of one of Amber’s photos…we absolutely love displaying Amber’s work in our home! It’s my favorite way to decorate!

nap shenanigans!

oh, wow.

You may remember my last blog post; I was talking about Alana learning to sit up in her crib last week, and Rich lowering it to keep her safe.

Well, the very next day, I walked in the nursery to comfort a crying Alana and this was what I found:

Oh ya, she is standing!

P7220002.JPG

P7220003.JPG

P7220004.JPG

And so, for the second time in two days, Rich lowered the crib a level.

Who knew that she would sit up in her crib (for the first time) one day, and then stand (for the first time) the next? Apparently, we are on the baby mobility fast track, and I’m a little flustered!

Then, today, I came in the nursery to find her standing again, this time, looking for the paci that she had thrown through the crib slats. Oh, this should be a fun new game. I feel tired just thinking about it :)

And just minutes ago I checked on her and this was what I found:

P7280028.JPG

How sad! I carefully lowered her to a laying position and hoped that she’d stay asleep. She’s such an incredibly light sleeper. It seemed to have worked, but goodness, if there is a way to get the child to nap when I put her in the crib, that would be great! I didn’t realize how easy I had it before she got to be so busy!

With this newfound freedom, there has been a lot going on in the crib, but not a whole lot of sleeping ;)

learning curve…

Hey everyone! I have missed you while I’ve been away. We’ve been in a technological transition, and I find myself now blogging for the first time on our new iMac!

Yep, we’ve upgraded here at the Smith household, and the centerpiece of the change is a new iMac! I’ve used Rich’s Mac Book Pro from time to time, but never for much of anything except to check email or hop on a website. But, we decided it was time to upgrade, condense, organize, sync up, and just generally get into a better groove on the workflow side of things. Streamlining, for sure.

Which means that my comfy, happy blogging process has been disturbed! I had quite the system going, and now I have lots to learn! I’d transfer my images, edit, upload, and import them with my eyes closed (okay, not really), but now I need them wide open and a fully functioning brain to re-wire my way of thinking!

Here she is.

Hello, beautiful!

imackeyboard_2_20071026

Nope, there is no CPU to worry about, just this big, happy monitor. Which means extra storage space where our tower had been. And extra storage is always a good thing.

So far, I’ve fallen in love with iPhoto, iChat, Address Book, iCal, and who knows what else I have to discover! I’m particularly excited about iMovie, where I want to learn how to edit and prepare the videos I’ve taken! Yes, certainly, fun times await!

We’ve experimented with just one video so far, and it’s a kicker: Click here to see a hilarious video of Alana from a couple of weeks ago! Be sure to turn the volume up before you play the video! It was my mom’s little game with Alana while she was here.

By the way, if you are interested in seeing what my mom and I did on the crafting front (and you are not already subscribed to my craft blog), click here to check it out!

Now, on to recent happenings around here!

I mentioned in my previous post that Rich and I dedicated Alana early this month. What I didn’t mention was that when Pastor Frank handed the microphone to Rich in front of church, Alana reached out her hand, grabbed it, and opened her mouth…and everyone burst out laughing. She stayed there with her mouth open, as if deciding whether she wanted to eat the microphone or just say a few words about the special occasion. Thank you so much to my dear friend Naomi for this photo!

And thank you so much to Brittany for these two! We were totally absent-minded that morning, so without friends who take photos without even being asked, we wouldn’t have this documentation!!!

Then last week, Alana and I were off to Laura’s baby shower. Rich grabbed these two shots of us as we headed out, but I didn’t get ANY pictures at the shower since I was SO busy trying to keep Alana contained. She’s getting so active, and so grabby! We had a great time, and are so excited for Laura and Jon Paul expecting their first baby…a girl!!!

A new obsession with my keys:

Why would she want her colorful plastic baby ones when she can have my drab, bacteria-ridden adult ones?

I mean, really!

P7120008

And I really haven’t done any research to find out how old babies typically are when they learn to drink from a straw, but Alana started doing just that last week. It’s adorable, and totally surprised us!

Notice her clutching my keys in one hand while holding the straw in the other ;)

Then last weekend we were off to Matt and Erin’s (couple’s) baby shower! This is part of the gift we bought for their little boy! Dwell Studio is one of my favorite brands, and their baby products just make me so happy :) That perfect giraffe is not just soft and adorable, it’s a rattle! Ah, so cute.

Alana and I hanging out at the shower, socializing…

P7180053.JPG

while the boys played corn toss…whatever that is…and it looked fun!

P7180066.JPG

Matt and Erin’s friend Kristen and her husband threw the shower, and did an incredible job! Everything was completely delicious and fun. They even made the fondant cake themselves! Now I want to try!

P7180069.JPG

The games were hilarious. Everyone made play-doh babies (Rich’s is the blue baby, holding a camera!)….and I even won a blockbuster gift card for guessing the closest number of Qtips in a bottle :)

P7180077.JPG

It was well past Alana’s bedtime, but she hung in there and gave everyone lots of smiles…but was SO tired by the time we headed home.

P7180073.JPG

This was so sad…

I thought since Alana enjoys her bath time so much, I would give her a fun new experience and introduce her to the shower. My notions were way off! She clung to me like her life was in jeopardy and screamed like I’ve never heard her scream before.

Note to self: the shower completely terrifies Alana, and she may now need years of therapy to dispel her irrational fear of warm, falling water.

Here she is, trying her best to calm down, once I took her out of the shower and bundled her up. Look at that little face!

P7180048.JPG

I just took this picture of Alana this weekend…I’d gotten home and she was asleep in her carseat, which happens often, but when I looked at her, I couldn’t believe it. It was like, all of the sudden, she was not a little baby anymore. It was just one of those moments that I’ve heard parents talk about. She looked so big to me, and I can’t believe that I have an 8 month old. Anyway, just some random thoughts…

P7200087.JPG

And this was a nice little surprise. Even though Alana has been sitting up since she was six months old, she has only recently figured out how to get herself into a sitting position from laying down. She’s been doing it pretty well lately, so when I went in to get her up from a nap yesterday, there she was, sitting there, so proud of herself.

P7210100.JPG

She got excited when she saw me, and leaned forward to grab the side of the crib…which freaked me out. Needless to say, Rich lowered the crib today and hopefully we will be okay, at least until she starts standing…

P7210098.JPG

Then on Sunday came another shower, this one, a bridal shower…for none other than the beautiful and hilarious Shanika. For those of you who have known me a while (or were at my wedding) you recognize Shanika. She was a bridesmaid in our wedding four years ago, and will wed Ben on 08-08-08. We are so excited for them and can’t wait to see what God has in store for this couple’s journey! Congrats, Shankia! We love you!

Also, Rich will be photographing their wedding, and recently posted their engagement session on his blog…be sure to check it out here and leave him some blog love!

P7200086.JPG

Then, Sunday evening was a girls night! Can I get an “Amen?!”

These girls make me feel old, cause we’ve known each other since, well, pretty much the first day of our freshman year of college. It many ways, it feels like we only graduated a couple of years ago, but then I do the math and realize it’s been longer.

When we met we weren’t even twenty, and now, well, we’re all pretty close to a different decade ;)

Bri, Bethany, and Heidi, girls, I love you! It is always a blast, and this time was no exception! I’m still thinking the girls night out needs to be monthly…and in my opinion, should always include dessert sharing like this one did :) Hello!

P7200094.JPG

Whew. And that has been the past couple of weeks around here! Everybody have a fantastic week!

a ray of sunshine…

My mom was in town all week.

It was absolutely wonderful - and I have no earthly idea how the days flew by with such speed.

And today she left.

It has been an appropriately gloomy day. Alternate drizzles and rain drops have fallen, coinciding perfectly with my mood. Ever since Alana and I took mom to the airport this morning, I’ve been missing her like crazy.

Having her here is like a ray of sunshine and sending her back is like an emotional thunderstorm.

I hate being the one who’s left behind. The house has been lively and full of grandma-love all week, and now, in her absence, everything reminds me of her.

I hate washing the sheets and towels after she leaves. Not because I mind laundry - I don’t - but because it is a glaring reminder that she’s not using the guest bed and bathroom anymore.

Things were so quiet today. Not because my mom is loud, but because she brings loads of laughter and great conversation. I soak it up and hope that it sustains me until the next time.

On the kitchen island sits the remainder of a Publix Bakery yellow cake with butter cream icing - her favorite.

On the sink sit her rubber gloves that she uses to do the dishes.

On the counter sits the coffee pot that she uses each morning, filled with coffee grinds that smell of her morning caffeine fix.

The guest bedroom is vacant; the bed made and pillows arranged after she stripped the bed so that I could wash the sheets.

The dining room table is filled with crafting projects that we worked on all week (More on that really soon!).

Even Alana reminds me of my mom. She’s been spitting at me all day, a fun little game she played with her grandma all week. I’ve been choking up as I’ve spit back at her.

Without further ado, and since I’ve emoted with such melodrama, it is time to post our photos from the week.

This was taken right after we picked mom up at the airport last week. Alana hadn’t seen her for several months, so I was curious to see how she’d react. She did well for a while, and then cried for me. She changed so much as the week progressed and by the time mom left today, Alana didn’t even care if I was in the room anymore! It was great!

P7030002

Alana has begun to present quite the dining challenge! When we go out to eat now, she is hard to contain! She is so busy, active, and interested in everything that is on the table, that we have a hard time keeping her engaged in baby-safe things. My mom’s travel-sized lotion came in handy all week, and we incessantly played the “pick-it-up-off-the-ground” game that so many parents have enjoyed.

P7030004

Right when we got back from the airport, mom and Alana got down to business playing a fun little game. Mom picked up this activity mat and tossed it onto Alana…

P7030013

Then she’d say in a sing-song voice, “Where’s Alana???”

P7030006

P7030021

And she’d grab the mat off of Alana, who thought it was the best game ever!

P7030014

On Saturday morning, Alana spent some quality time with Rich! She’s fascinated by his Mac and completely ignored her toys to watch the screen saver :)

A little snuggle time…

Rich had family in town last weekend, so we enjoyed a couple of evenings out at his parents home! Here we are in the front yard…

We dedicated Alana Sunday morning at church, and along with my mom being there, Rich’s whole family also showed up to support us. We had a wonderful, meaningful dedication, and want to thank everyone for coming! We love and appreciate you!

After the dedication, we all went to Jason’s Deli to enjoy a family lunch! Here is Rich with his dad and grandmother (Alana’s only great-grandparent), Me-Maw. Generational pictures are incredible history!

To keep Alana entertained, mom gave her a carrot stick to play with. Alana doesn’t have any teeth yet, but she enjoyed gnawing on it with her gums, and it definitely did the trick! We enjoyed our lunch and she did very well!

My mom sent Rich and I on a date while she babysat on Tuesday night. We went to a Chattanooga Wedding Professionals meeting (where we snagged this self-portrait) and then for dessert (tirimisu, my favorite!) and a movie! It was wonderful, and a much needed break for the two of us! Thank you SO much, mom!!!

P7080188

We concluded our time together on Wednesday by enjoying breakfast together at Fresh to Order and then another lunch at Chili’s (thank you again for sharing your gift card, mom!).

Okay, well, mom. I hope you enjoyed the looooooong blog post! It was therapeutic to write and post pictures since I miss you so much. I have a lump in my throat, but I am so thankful to have had the time we had.

We love you, miss you, and appreciate you.

flashback!

Those of you who have been following the blog for a long time may remember this picture, taken at Disneyworld on our 2006 summer family vacation. My mom, sister and I stumbled upon these hilariously round little characters, and even though none of us are particularly drawn to Winnie the Pooh decor, we thought they were SO cute and just so funny.

img_4384

Well, my mom actually bought all four of them and gave Piglet and Pooh to me, and Tigger and Eeyore to Amber.

Fast forward to a couple of days ago, when I decided that it would be fun to put all four of them in Alana’s nursery…even though they don’t really match the decor.

I called Amber and asked if I could borrow Tigger and Eeyore until she wanted them back. She complied, and sent the package. I received it on Monday, and proceeded to introduce Alana to the whole crew…

Clearly, she liked Tigger the best! She is touching him (or reaching for him) in each picture, which I thought was so cute! Thanks for sharing, Amber! I will teach Alana to be really gentle, I promise!
