I’ve been avoiding Rich’s monster lens, the 70-200mm for a while now, knowing that using it would make me deliriously happy yet simultaneoulsy knowing that it is ridiculously heavy and was bound to make my arm and wrist hurt.
Well, a couple of evenings ago, I decided it was time to try it out and practice in the front yard. So, with the beautiful golden evening light and sweet little Alana, I ventured outside to experiment.
And I was right.
I loved it, and it made my wrist and arm hurt. It’s heavy, and completely amazing.
Here are the photos from my little exercise and I hope you enjoy them. I know, I know, I have no shortage of photos of Alana, but she’s my little practice subject…I don’t know what else I’d enjoy taking pictures of nearly as much as I do her. Certainly not the trees and bushes. And Rich is too busy to model for my practice sessions!

Just chillin! I love her adorable body language and mannerisms! She helps to counteract the stress of running our own business because she’s so entertaining! We definitely laugh a lot while watching her.

And yes, this is another perfectly wonderful, adorable hat by pdxbeanies…if you haven’t already, check out her Etsy store for the most amazing baby hats ever

Waving to neighbors. Or maybe a dog or cat. She’s SO friendly.

Even telephone polls look pretty with this lens. I’m in love.![]()

I had so much fun zooming all the way to 200mm and creating this ultra-shallow depth of field!

Enthralled by a flower…

Playing with grass…

Gosh I loved the light. Right about this time, my hand was shaking and I was extremely thankful for image stabilization…

I love this next photo, because Alana was sitting in a lovely little pocket of light. The sun was getting lower in the sky and the shadows were encroaching, but she was sitting in a small circle of glorious sunshine!

Then she got really upset because she wanted me to come play with her. So, I put my camera down and played with the flowers and grass while she calmed down!
But first I got the shot, of course

She LOVES to play outside, which is super fortunate for me, who LOVES to photograph her playing outside. I’m definitely going to be able to remember this particular front yard from EVERY angle when we move away! Ha! I’m such a nerd.
This is one of my favorites from the mini-session!

I’m thinking she’ll be a little gardener pretty soon…she always plays with the dirt in this pot. Who knows, maybe she’ll be able to keep plants alive, unlike her mother!

I love that Spring is coming and with it, lots of beautiful color!!!

Thanks for coming along on my newest little journey!
