alana’s school uniform style project!

At Alana’s school, the kids in preschool and kindergarten wear play clothes to school, and the kids in 1st through 5th grade wear school uniforms. So now that she is going into first grade, she will be wearing uniforms for the first time.

Being someone who thoroughly enjoys kid style, I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about school uniforms. After all, my memories of uniforms date back to high school and are largely associated with getting detentions (despite the fact that I was a rule-abiding, teacher-pleaser type) because my button-down shirts had inadvertently come untucked from my stiff pleated plaid skirt that had to be two inches above my knees and no shorter. Administration was always on the lookout for uniform violations, and I was guilty of many-an-unintentional violation. Good times.

I’m so glad to report that there is life after high school.

Uniforms. Not exactly fond memories, but not entirely negative either, when you consider what a time-saver it was each morning to throw on whatever pieces were clean; allowing time to sleep until the last possible minute and sparing angst-ridden teenagers concern over what to wear and how cool (or inevitably uncool) your choice of clothing was. I distinctly remember feeling incredibly cool when I got to wear my oversized Tommy Hilfiger polo on non-uniform days but then realizing that I was promptly out of options for next time. So, there are distinct advantages to the notion of uniforms and the fact that they leveled the playing field a little for those of us who were undisputedly not so cool.

So a few weeks ago when Alana and I began the search for her first ever school uniforms I wondered how she’d react. I chose several different types of mix-and-match pieces and hoped for the best. We got into the fitting rooms at Target and she was so excited about the uniform pieces that she jumped up and down. It was officially going better than I thought. Maybe it’s because she attended school as a kindergartener seeing all of the “big kids” wearing uniforms that made them exciting for her.

Regardless, we have both decided that uniforms are super fun 🙂

Like my other style projects, the inspiration behind this one is the similar: to take an item of clothing (or, in this case, a whole set of pieces) and mix and match them and make as many outfits as we can…and to make them as cute and interesting as we can. Alana was so excited to do another style project since it had been several months since her last. And of course, we had fun experimenting with various uniform combos before school starts.

And so, I present Alana’s big first grade school uniform style project! I think she rocked it! I styled the outfits, but she brought the personality! We tried to put a new spin on some more traditional uniform styles, I think we succeeded with some cute accessories; all of which we already owned. And the blazers and cardigans were in her closet already, which helped to make the uniforms a bit more interesting.

All in all, I’m pretty proud of our new project and I love that we documented this new phase in her school life!
